Friendship.

We could be apart for a century,
nothing would change.
We’d smile, greet, and sit.
Comfortable silence
Companionable silence.
No pleasantries,
no catching up.
We’d talk about poetry,
about architecture, literature, and art.
We’d make music together.

Because we don’t need to cling.
I don’t need to see you every day,
talk to you every day.
That would be nice, wouldn’t it?
But we don’t need that. We can be
separate, but still equals in mind.
We’re not the same in everything,
only the things that really matter.
I can be me, and you can be you.
No judging.

We see the world differently sometimes
But it's okay
because
at least we both look at the world.
