What it feels like to be alive

Life is an intricately woven dance--ever changing, yet never changed. The dancers dart in and out of complex patterns. Every so often, one steps forward, distinguishing themselves with a burst of beautiful energy. The energy they give goes back into the pattern; life moves on.
Joy explodes as more people understand the pattern they move in. Their joy matures as they observe and analyze, finding the reasons for the pulchritude around them but marveling at it nonetheless.
The tempo slows, and some lose their grasp of the rhythm. They stumble, yet most are able to plunge back in eventually. They who can't wander off, struggling to find meaning in the empty darkness. Without them, the dance goes on. A lucky few are completely submerged; they notice the loss of friends, making holes in the delicate fabric--but still they dance.
Partners find each other within the ordered chaos; they find safety and peace with their companions. They dance together; at first a passionate tango, then a gentle waltz. Their love brings new dimensions to the dance. Nobody has to be alone.
Another tempo change--a lively melody sings out and infuses all with renewed vigor. New people fill in the gaps left by those who fell away. Children laugh in exultation as they get caught up in the beat.

And at long last, others began to fade away. The music quiets, becomes unbearably sweet--a note of melancholy creates dissonance. The solitary dancer is weary now, calling to friends to stay with them, to keep the dance going, but all are gone to the gulf of forgotten memory. A tenuous note stretches into eternity, and the dancer realizes, it's over. They sweep a graceful bow and wait for Death to claim them.

There will be another dance.
