Everyone else is doing it...

Revelation: just because everyone else seems to ignore the rules doesn't mean the rules aren't in force.

Let's look at the Honor Code (henceforth to be referred to as the HC), for example. Before I came to BYU, I thought that everyone would actually follow it, especially the dress and grooming standards. Upon arriving, I realized that it's not so. It seems like an entire generation of girls has no idea where their knees are, which I find fairly disturbing. And whoever told my generation that tights count as pants... ew. And boys, you signed the HC too. Shave.

I also find it downright disgusting that it's somehow okay for dress standards to go out the window for athletics. Every day when I'm walking to campus, I pass probably a dozen men who find it perfectly alright to run in short shorts and nothing else. I honestly don't see why it's so hard to wear longer shorts and a shirt when running--maybe I'm being slightly myopic here, but why are athletes exempt from the dress code?

Church is no different. The majority of skirts are nowhere near the knee.

This post is making me sound like a crotchety old lady. But really, seeing all this permissiveness made me wonder if the wardrobe changes I made were unnecessary--if everyone else is wearing it, why can't I? Today made me glad that I didn't get sucked into that, because my Book of Mormon professor gave us a lecture for 15 minutes about how he's seen more HC violations this fall than in his entire career here.

The bottom line is, don't be swayed into thinking it's okay just because everyone else is doing it.

Cranky old woman, signing out.

  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is totally peeved by that! I don't go to BYU, but 93% of my school is mormon, and I am sickened by it too!
Ah, I just love you :)
